The constraints that shaped modern hiring disappeared decades ago. The rituals they created did not.

In 1987, a recruiter at a Fortune 500 company faced a practical problem. The manila envelope sitting on her desk—the standard No. 10 business envelope, measuring 4⅛ by 9½ inches—could comfortably hold three sheets of 20-pound bond paper before the postage rate jumped. Any thicker, and the candidate was literally paying a premium for verbosity.

Thus was born the "one-page resume" rule.

Nearly four decades later, that envelope has been replaced by an email attachment, rendered as pixels on a screen that scrolls infinitely in either direction. The postal constraint vanished. The rule remained.
