Cybersecurity and GRC terminology: English to Mexican Spanish
Use this guide when translating cybersecurity, privacy, audit, and GRC content for professionals in Mexico. It describes professional usage, not word-for-word equivalence.
Edition 2026.3. The companion guide, Spanish to English, lives on the Spanish version of this page. If something here is not how you would say it, tell us.
Legal note: Legal terms are date-sensitive, and this guide is not legal advice. Verify the current official instrument, authority, and procedure before relying on a legal translation.
How to use this guide
The default register is formal Mexican professional writing: security policies, audit reports, regulatory material, technical documentation, and professional training. Team chat, job titles, product names, commands, and quoted interface text may retain more English.
- Translate: Mexican professional writing normally uses the Spanish term.
- Keep in English: The English borrowing is the normal specialist term in Mexico.
- Context-dependent: The correct form changes with technical sense, register, organization, or jurisdiction.
- Official name or acronym: Preserve the official name, designation, or working acronym.
- Legal term, date-sensitive: Use the wording of the governing instrument and verify the current official text.
Consistency applies to the same sense, register, jurisdiction, and grammatical use. It does not require different concepts to share one translation.

calibration mirror
→espejo de calibraciónTranslateAll professional registers

CNBV
→CNBV; Comisión Nacional Bancaria y de ValoresOfficial name or acronymMexican financial regulation

data breach
→vulneración de seguridad; vulneración de seguridad de datos personales; brecha de datosLegal term, date-sensitivePrivacy law and nonstatutory cyber writing
Vulneración de seguridad is the exact term of the current LFPDPPP (DOF, March 20, 2025). It appears there twice (vulneración a la seguridad appears zero times in that law) and the operative use is article 19 (las vulneraciones de seguridad ocurridas en cualquier fase del tratamiento). The LGPDPPSO uses both vulneración de seguridad and vulneración a la seguridad, with the breach taxonomy at articles 31 to 35. When citing law, preserve the instrument's exact wording. The longer vulneración de seguridad de datos personales appears in neither current statute; it derives from the 2011 Regulation, still officially listed as current, and remains a safe descriptive umbrella outside direct statutory citation. Brecha de datos is clear nonstatutory professional language; brecha de seguridad appears zero times in either law. Do not import another jurisdiction's notification rule.
Example: The controller documented the personal data breach. → El responsable documentó la vulneración de seguridad de datos personales.

data loss prevention
→prevención de pérdida de datosTranslateData-security product terminology
Prevención de pérdida de datos is the direct expansion used by many DLP products in their Spanish materials. Do not substitute prevención de fuga de información, which emphasizes a narrower disclosure or exfiltration problem.
Evidence basis: Professional usage judgment; no legal force is claimed.
That is not how I would say it
data processor
→persona encargadaLegal term, date-sensitivePrivacy law
Current Mexican law uses persona encargada. Encargado del tratamiento is usual EU GDPR terminology and is not the Mexican statutory label. Do not translate the role literally as procesador de datos.

disclosure
→divulgaciónContext-dependentVulnerability handling, privacy, and legal writing
Use divulgación for vulnerability disclosure and many general disclosure contexts. Do not use it as a universal privacy-law mapping: transferencia, remisión, and an unauthorized revelación describe different acts. A non-disclosure agreement is an acuerdo de confidencialidad.
Example: The policy defines coordinated vulnerability disclosure. → La política define la divulgación coordinada de vulnerabilidades.

endpoint (endpoint security)
→endpoint; punto final; dispositivo de punto finalContext-dependentEndpoint security and EDR
Retain endpoint in product names and common practitioner prose. Mexican institutional and procurement writing also uses punto final, puntos finales, and dispositivo de punto final; follow the source and the organization's controlled vocabulary. Do not treat every end-user device as an endpoint-security term.
Example: The EDR agent protects every endpoint. → El agente EDR protege cada punto final.

framework; frameworks
→framework; frameworks; marco de referenciaKeep in EnglishGovernance, software, and official titles
Keep the noun in English, masculine, with the English plural: el framework, los frameworks. In compounds the noun stays English: framework de seguridad, framework de cumplimiento, framework de controles, framework de gestión de riesgos, framework de ciberseguridad. Preserve official names such as NIST Cybersecurity Framework unless an authoritative translated title applies. A legal or regulatory framework is a different concept and stays marco regulatorio or marco normativo. Also correct in formal writing: marco de referencia, then marco. Prefer framework, and use one term for the same thing throughout a text.
Example: The organization adopted a risk framework. → La organización adoptó un framework de gestión de riesgos.

gap
→brechaContext-dependentCapability, control, and privacy assessment

log; logs
→log; logs; registro; bitácoraContext-dependentOperations, audit, and legal records
Keep the noun in English, masculine, with the English plural: el log, los logs. In compounds the noun stays English and the modifier follows in Spanish: log de auditoría, log de eventos, log del sistema, log de acceso, log de autenticación, log del firewall, archivo de log, entrada de log, modo solo log. As the object of a process: gestión de logs, retención de logs, reenvío de logs, correlación de logs, análisis de logs. The verb is registrar (never loguear), and logging as a practice is registro. Product names stay as written (VPC Flow Logs), and where a law names its own record, quote it as written, such as bitácora de vulneraciones. Also correct and widely understood: registro and bitácora (registro de auditoría, bitácora de acceso). Prefer log, and use one term for the same thing throughout a text.

→threat hunting; caza de amenazasContext-dependentSOC practice and formal explanatory writing
Retain threat hunting in SOC roles, team dialogue, and procedure names. Use caza de amenazas in formal explanatory or government prose. Mexican official material uses the Spanish form, so it is not merely marketing translation.

Notificar and notificación are common formal renderings, but preserve the governing instrument's exact verb. Mexican privacy statutes may use informar for a duty commonly described in English as notification. Avoid casual reportar when it would change the recipient or legal effect.

Zero Trust
→Zero Trust; modelo Zero TrustKeep in EnglishArchitecture, identity, and access management
Mexican professional and federal policy writing retains Zero Trust. On first mention, an explanatory gloss such as modelo Zero Trust, basado en nunca confiar y siempre verificar may help. Do not force confianza cero as the name of the model.

zero-day
→vulnerabilidad de día cero; zero-day; 0-dayContext-dependentFormal explanation, technical feeds, and offensive security
Use vulnerabilidad de día cero, exploit de día cero, or ataque de día cero in formal explanatory prose. Retain zero-day or 0-day in technical feeds, tool output, and offensive-security dialogue. Both patterns are current in Mexico.
Example: The vendor patched a zero-day vulnerability. → El proveedor corrigió una vulnerabilidad de día cero.
